I feel like there are things that we should talk about in regards to the hotel scene in episode 11.

Haru is sleeping on his side, as opposed to supine in episode 5. He’s also clearly not able to sleep, a fact that Makoto is easily able to pick up on.

Furthermore, Haru is facing the wall, away from Makoto, and his eyes are trained directly in front of him.

As opposed to Makoto’s shifting and turning of his head, Haru stays still and only fractionally closes his eyes (as seen above) after Makoto expresses his hopes for their race tomorrow. 

Basically, Haru is unnaturally still at this point.

And then he lets what he’s been thinking out, slowly, with pauses inbetween.

Of course, Makoto (even as sleepy as he is) registers the meaning behind his words and quickly sits up, blushing and calling out, “Haru!?”

But what I feel like a lot of people missed is the fact that Haru is blushing as well at this point. And not only that, but he visibly tenses up—and Makoto notices that as well, his expression changing subtly.

And it’s then that Haru gets up and says he’s going to go for a little walk.

Haru, who is usually direct and not one to voice things goes out of his way to say something that Makoto is already aware of. He didn’t need to voice it for Makoto to know Haru appreciated him. That’s how they always operate, with him speaking in silence. 

But this time it’s different—and that’s really apparent with how flustered Haru gets at having actually voiced something like that—which is why he has to bolt to clear his head.

And when Nagisa mistakes it for nervousness about the race, Haru says:

And his expression here is especially telling from what we know from High Speed.

It always ended up that way. No matter how loudly Haruka tried to talk over him, no matter how hard Haruka tried to resist, in the end things would eventually go Makoto’s way. At times like these, Haruka would shut his mouth and look to the side. Talking about it any more would be annoying, but on the other hand, there was no way he was going to just give in completely, either. In Haruka’s case, he showed that with his behavior, by silently looking away.

It’s obvious where his mind is and how important Makoto is to him, but you don’t really see the true depth and sincerity of Haru’s sentiments until you put them in context.

Makoto is and has always been the one constant in Haru’s life. His parents are gone, his grandma died, Rin and Nagisa left, and even swimming with his friends—something that brought them together—wasn’t an option after he quit over all the guilt he felt.

But through it all, Makoto stayed by his side and never left, never quesitoned him. And they both know that he will never leave, that they’ll always be together. Like the director said, they’re a pair. Where one goes the other will invariably follow.

“Makoto…”

“I appreciate you being here for me.”

“Thanks.”

While he may not have come out and poured his whole heart out, this is basically the Haru equivalent—and with his tone of voice, his body language, and the spontaneity of what he says (as if he just suddenly blurted it out before he could second-guess himself) there’s no way Makoto doesn’t understand.

After all, they know each other better than anyone else, and if there’s anything I know, it’s that there’s no mistaking that what they feel for each other is unquestionably strong and undeniably mutual.
